Why Are Glass Mousepads Rising in Popularity?
Share
Over the past couple of years, glass mousepads have been rapidly rising in popularity, with many big brand names such as Razer and Asus entering the market.
But why?
Why is such a unique, and for some, a very head-scratching product becoming increasingly popular?
Is it because most glass pads provide a frictionless experience that no cloth pad can replicate, or maybe because they will pretty much last a lifetime and are one of the easiest pads to maintain as well?
Most glass pads offer a frictionless, super-fast, and smooth experience that cloth pads simply cannot replicate. They provide an experience that even the fastest cloth pads can barely match.
The experience of using a glass pad is unlike any other mousepad I have tried, in my opinion. The best way to describe it is instant input and response. Unlike cloth pads, even the fastest ones still have a slight bit of friction when you start swiping your mouse. With a glass pad it’s an instant start with smooth and fast tracking that gives you pretty much no control on the faster surfaces.
Many people who are interested in mousepads think it will instantly make them a better player with crazy aim right from the start. In reality, it takes a long time to get used to it and start performing as you did before switching to glass. Most people, when they first switch to a glass pad, might feel like they can't control their mouse anymore or have forgotten how to aim. This experience is quite accurate, especially if you're switching from a control mousepad to a glass pad. It's similar to using a new mouse for the first time; you have to develop muscle memory until you start performing at your best. On a glass pad, you have to train your hand to, for example, stop on a dime on a very fast and smooth surface, which will take some time.
Glass mousepads also come in a variety of surfaces. Not all glass mousepads have to be extremely fast as people often assume. Many current glass pad offerings can be categorized as balanced, providing the expected speed from a glass pad but with a hint of control that makes the surface more manageable. There are also control-focused glass pads like the Cosmic from Wraith that provide a purely controlled experience. Then you have the super-fast glass pads that people recognize, like the SP-004 from Wallhack, and the upcoming 'The Beast' from Tekkusai.
Another significant aspect of glass mousepads is their designs. Given the nature of a glass mousepad, which essentially replicates a framed art piece covered with glass, the designs on these pads really stand out. There's a vast variety of art styles from different brands, like GLSSWRKS, known for their exceptional designs.
Glass mousepads offer the most consistent feel of any mousepad available. A glass mousepad will feel exactly the same a year after purchase as it did on day one. While some glass pads, like the Razer Atlas, have a coating that wears down over time, most feature a permanently bonded coating that doesn't degrade. They are also less affected by temperature or humidity changes compared to cloth pads, ensuring consistent performance regardless of conditions. Unlike cloth pads, which might wear down over months, leading to slower glide or fraying edges, necessitating replacement, a glass pad could be a one-time purchase for life. With a glass pad, there's no need to worry about the surface slowing down, the stitching fraying, or even accidentally spilling something that could ruin the surface.
With glass pads, you don't have to worry about how much pressure you apply. In contrast, with cloth pads, especially the softer ones, many people need to consider how much they press down on their mousepad. The amount of pressure applied to a cloth pad alters the friction on the surface, thus changing how the pad feels from moment to moment. A glass pad will always feel the same because of the solid nature of glass.
Another benefit of glass pads is their ease of maintenance due to the glass surface. Cleaning is a matter of minutes; just wiping down with a microfiber cloth before use removes most dust and grime. For a deep clean, some dish soap and water will do, without deteriorating the pad like cleaning cloth pads does.
However, what are the negatives of owning a glass mousepad?
There are two significant downsides to owning a glass mousepad:
- Wear on Mouse Skates: Glass mousepads are known to wear down mouse skates faster because a softer material (the mouse feet) contacts a harder, more abrasive material (the glass). Some softer skates wear down quickly, needing replacement every 2-3 weeks, especially on glass pads with more texture. Companies have started making skates designed specifically for glass pads, like the Xraypad Obsidian skates, which are made of a harder material, last longer on glass, and are quieter on the surface.
- Humidity and Skin Contact: This issue can significantly detract from the user experience for many. The humidity between your skin and the glass surface can cause your skin to stick, making the experience less enjoyable. However, this can be mitigated with products like gaming sleeves, which cover your skin, remove moisture, and make it so the sleeve rather than your skin interacts with the pad.
If you're after a mousepad that offers raw input, super speed, and smoothness, a glass mousepad might be the best pick for you.
