Does Weight Matter?
Share
Over the years the weight of gaming mice have been going down at a rapid rate. Back in the day the norm was to find mice that were in the 80+ gram range but nowadays, that’s not the case and mice like that are almost in a way not really being accepted in the community.
Now days it’s much more common to find mice around the 40-60 gram range with a lot of mice targeting the 20-30 gram range.
A lot of brands are making pushes to get their mice down to a lower weight mostly because it looks good when they are marketing the mouse which shows as a lot of mice are being bought with the low weight of a mouse being a key feature.
Other than looking cool on paper, the weight of a mouse impacts how it overall feels in game as well. In my opinion mice that are lighter in weight feel faster and more snappy when swiping around on my mousepad. While a heavier mouse almost creates a feeling of it melting into the mousepad and feeling slower.
A lighter mouse in our opinion helps and aids in scenarios like target switching and tracking while heavier mice will help in more control based scenarios. For example someone might choose a lighter mouse for a game like Overwatch since in that game you are moving your mouse a lot and you won’t feel like you are being weighed down by your mouse. While someone that plays Valorant might prefer a heavier mouse because they want to focus more on holding corners and having more control.
But at the end of the day like everything in this peripheral hobby it all comes down to personal preference. You might prefer a setup that is purely perfected towards a speed experience so having a super light mouse and speed skates and mousepad. While someone else might prefer a more balanced feeling by having a lighter mouse but with controlled skates.
Another thing to note is that a mouse can have a low weight but can still feel heavy because the weight balancing is towards the front or the back of the mouse. You can have a heavier mouse with perfect weight balancing next to a mouse that is lighter with horrible weight balancing and that heavier mouse will lighter just because of how the weight balancing is done in that mouse.
Unrelated to the weight of a mouse but things like the travel distance of the clicks and how heavy the scroll wheel feels can also greatly affect how a mouse feels to you. Some people like a heavier scroll wheel so they don't accidently hit it while some people prefer a lighter scroll wheel as they use it for example doing some movement tech in Apex Legends.
A lot of mice these days sacrifice the overall feeling of the mouse by adding cut outs through out the mouse to save on weight. A good example of this is the ULX by Finalmouse. A mouse that is pretty light that starts off at 33 grams. But to get down to that weight they hade to sacrifice the feel and looks of the mouse by adding the hexagon cut outs on the top and sides of the mouse. While some people might not be bothered by the holes there are some people that will not use a mouse with cutouts as it feels uncomfortable to hold or they are worried about dust and other debris getting into the mouse. Mice like the Sora V2 and the Scyrox V8 come in at around that low weight of 30-35 grams while having a full shell, so no cutouts are present anywhere on the mouse. You aren’t getting the exotic materials like Carbon Fiber or Magnesium and instead opting for a full plastic shell but you are still getting the low weight with a full shell with no holes.
If you are someone that is against having the cutouts on the surface of the mouse but still wishes to have a lighter feeling mouse, you could consider a simple mod for the base of the mouse. One of the most popular base mods you can buy is the Aero Base from the brand TJ Exclusives. They make these mods for a bunch of popular mice. Really easy to install with it taking around 5-10 minutes to get it installed onto your mouse. Depending on what mouse you are installing the mod onto, these base mods can reduce the weight by 6-10 grams.
Or maybe you are using a wired mouse and feel that the cable is making the mouse feel heavier or the cable not feeling very flexible. A new cable like the Lethal Cable from the brand Lethal Gaming Gear can make a pretty big difference. I replaced the stock cable on the End Game Gear OP1 8K with the Lethal cable. While the stock cable on the mouse is pretty decent, the Lethal Cable makes a huge difference. It’s really thin and flexible making the mouse feel not only lighter but at times almost like a wireless mouse.
So at the end of the day does weight really matter?
Yes it Does
The weight of a mouse can impact things like how you aim and can also affect how comfortable a mouse feels for you.
